Lifestyle & Care Options in Senior Living Communities

Searching for a more active and engaged lifestyle? Could your parent use a helping hand with the daily tasks of living? Does your loved one need more personalized support from those who specialize in dementia care – or require 24/7 attention due to a chronic condition or mobility issue?

If you answered yes to any of the above questions, you’ll be happy to know that there is a type of senior living community available that can meet needed care options and personal preferences as well.

Senior Living Communities and Care Options

Families are not always aware of everything senior living communities have to offer. The following provides a brief summary and descriptions of what may be available in your area:

1. Independent living senior living communities

Older adults who are searching for a more convenient, active and maintenance-free lifestyle often find these communities the perfect place to make their home. With accessible residences, activities, amenities, fitness classes and dining options, they love having more free time to now spend as they wish.

Care options: Typically there is no care provided but residents may be able to hire a personal caregiver from the community or an outside agency if desired.

2. Assisted living senior living communities

If your loved ones could use support to live an independent life, an assisted living community could be the right fit. Not only will they have a private and accessible residence, they’ll also find a monthly calendar of activities, social events, healthy dining programs, scheduled transportation and the reassurance that someone is always there if help is needed.

Care options: Assistance is provided by a compassionate care team to help with daily tasks, such as bathing safely, getting dressed, grooming or managing medications.

3. Memory care senior living communities

When someone is living with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia, as a progressive disease the level of care needed also will increase. Families often discover that they can no longer keep their loved one safe and provide an environment that supports engagement and feeling connected.

Care options: These communities provide a specially trained staff to care and interact with the residents, not only keeping them safe but also supporting them to remain engaged and connected.

4. Skilled nursing senior living communities

If your loved one is unable to live at home or provide care for themselves, this type of community may be the best choice. Whether it’s due to frailty, chronic conditions or immobility, these residents need access to around-the-clock attention.

Care options: Your loved one will have everything required, including personal care, their residence, activities, healthy and delicious dining and social opportunities.

5. Respite care

Families that provide primary care for loved ones often discover they may need a break or respite and begin searching for alternative but excellent care. Other possibilities include care for those recovering from surgery or an illness who are able to leave the hospital but are not yet ready to return home.

Care options: Usually provided at assisted living or skilled nursing communities, your loved one will receive care by trained staff that could include physical or occupational therapy and access to all the amenities in the community.

6. CCRC senior living communities

Otherwise known as Continuing Care Retirement Communities or Life Plan Communities, CCRCs offer the full continuum of care, including independent living, assisted living, memory care and skilled nursing. The advantage of making a CCRC your home is that you can remain in the same community even if your health needs change in the future.

Care options: Depending on which level of care you are receiving, you will have access to the activities and amenities, staff assistance with daily tasks, specialized care for memory impairment or personal nursing care.
